Public records are public. Things like marriage and divorce records, criminal records, real estate deeds, lawsuit filings, liens, professional licensing records, and published phone directories are public.
There are companies (big list here) that will gather and store this public information. This is not illegal. This type of information is out there and governments have it, businesses have it and these people search websites have it. The details are all retrieved from public records. What these websites do is nothing new.
There are tons of these people search sites out there and most of these services charge fees to access this information. Most sites charge $5–$20 for a report, some per month. However, familytreenow.com, a recent website has made a lot of the information available for free.
By searching for a name, you can find past addresses and when you lived there, possible family members and their ages, and possible phone numbers.
The good news is for familytreenow.com, you can opt out and have your personal details removed.
Here’s how to opt out of familytreenow.com:
- Visit FamilyTreeNow.com/optout.
- Select each profile or variation of your name.
- Click the red “Opt Out” box for that record on the website.
- According to the website, removal can take up to 48 hours.
- You have to do them 1 at a time, checking the captcha each time.
I went through and opted out a bunch of my family members until I hit a limit and had to wait a few hours. :)
How to Opt Out of all the Public Records and People Search Companies
‼️Important note — opting out of all these companies will take time, and money, and I personally don’t think it is worth it. If you have specific privacy needs or requirements then it can be worth it for you.
