Should I buy a new Mac now? Rules to help you decide
Buying a new computer is a big purchase. It can be one of the most expensive purchases people make (besides like a car and a house etc).
So when is a good time to buy a new Mac? Here are some rules that can help.
Rule #1 — Always Check the Buyers Guide
iPhone, iPad, Mac Buyer's Guide: Know When to Buy
This page provides a product summary for each Apple model. The intent is to provide our best recommendations regarding…
MacRumors for years has been keeping track of when models are updated, when they were last updated etc. This is the current status of Macs for example:
The give the recommendations based on when it was last updated, and what the standard cadence for updates is. It isn’t fool proof but it is a good place to start.
Rule #2 — Check the Apple Event calendar
Macworld has a good article about this, which I quote below:
Apple follows a recognisable pattern with big announcements being made at two key events: WWDC in June, and iPhones in September. From time to time it also holds an event in October and an event in the spring.
The October event doesn’t happen every year. Apple didn’t hold an event in 2015 or 2017, for example, but on 27 October 2016 it held an event where it released the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar.
So google for the next Apple event and see if there is one happening or if the industry expects one to happen.
Waiting until after the Apple event can have 2 benefits. 1, you can get the latest and greatest Macs, and 2, you can get the last version for cheaper after the price drops etc.
Rule #3 — What is the urgency?
If your work computer dies, you just have to buy a new one. Or if you are going back to school etc. If you have to have a computer now, and are not sure if you need the latest and greatest, look at the refurbished selections from Apple. They are certified, and always cheaper.
Shop refurbished Mac notebooks and computers. Refurbished computers and notebooks are certified and tested by Apple…
Check the buyers guide and the Apple event schedule. Evaluate your urgency. And remember if you get stressed, that Macs hold their value really well. You can buy one at any time, and while it might not be the perfect time, it will be a good computer. I am typing this on a 3 year old Macbook and it is an absolute champ.
Good luck on your hunt for a new Mac!
