We were really proud of this bottle. :)

After saving all of our air miles forever, my family took our first trip to Tulum Mexico, to escape the snow and rain of Seattle and Utah. We absolutely loved it. We saw with turtles, explored ruins, and ate tacos. Lots of tacos. But the last thing I needed to do was launch a bottle into the ocean. I had packed a bottle and cork all down to Mexico in my luggage and I was determined to put a message in the bottle and throw it out to sea.

Origin of the Bottle

You may ask, why did I take a bottle and cork in my luggage all the way to Mexico? My brother was filming violin videos at the time, and one of his videos involved a pirate fight. The resolution was the defeated pirate (me) waking up and finding a map in a bottle. Have to leave it open for sequels right?

I found some of that footage. It is pretty great, and one of my finest acting performances.

Jerry Bruckheimer is going to be calling me for Pirates 6. Any day now.

Later my whole family wrote down all our favorite experiences of Tulum which we sealed in the bottle with a cork.

Out to Sea

Driving to the airport to go home, we found a nice looking beach, pulled off the road, and I whipped the bottle into the sea.

Notice the form, or lack thereof.

I didn’t really know what to expect. I figured the cork would leak and the message would get ruined. But imagine my surprise when I got home, and had not one, but two emails, from two different people saying they found my bottle!

Rocío was even nice enough to send pictures!

I love the picture of the bottle laying on the sand and seaweed.

Turns out where we had thrown the bottle in was a cove that pushed everything back to land so two people found it the same day. Ocean currents are weird.

I love treasure, and pirates, and secrets in bottles. Having someone actually find my bottle and email me was priceless. Having that connection to two families in far off Mexico makes it even more awesome.

In the time since, I have not received another message from someone else who found me Secrets of Tulum bottle, but I keep hoping.
