I was answering questions on Quora and came across this one. It intrigued me. If you google “How to start a candy company?” most of the answers are from low quality business.biz type sites with generic lists. So I decided to put some thought into this one.

How would I start a candy company? This is what I would do:

1. Start with your marketing.

How will you be different? What will you offer that others don’t? How do you beat the entrenched competition? You could be gluten free. You could include bugs in the candy. Hot sauce candy. Cinnamon only candy. Candy from a certain country.

2. Source your candy

Either learn to make it for the handmade angle or contact a manufacturer. Candy Detective — Candy Manufacturers, Suppliers & Services Figure out what you are going to offer and how much it will cost you. Don’t forget things like shipping, taxes etc.

3. Sell your candy

Get a Shopify account, run some Instagram Ads, do some influencer marketing. Write a killer blog post about how you started a candy company. Use a shipping company if you don’t want to ship orders yourself. Blackbox

Seems simple but the execution is everything here.

What kind of candy company would you start?

Code, design, cook. Make stuff. Cookies. @BYU grad.
