How to achieve any goal — create your can’t fail system
Good goal + good system = can’t fail
Yesterday we talked about setting good goals.
Good goals:
- Are informed
- Have set, viable time horizons
- Are in our control
- Have clear completion criteria
But even if you set good goals, you can easily fail to achieve them if you don’t have a system in place.
Piano Example
Let’s say you want to learn a new skill, to play the piano. You set a good goal.
’Learn to play 2 classical piano pieces with no major mistakes by June 30th 2025’
This goal is informed on your current level of piano skill, it has a set viable time horizon, it is in your control, and it has clear completion criteria.
You write this goal down, put it in your piano music box, and never look at it again. How likely are you to achieve this goal?
The Problem with Goals
Goals are great. Goals provide a sense of direction and purpose, and give us something to aim for. But they have limitations:
- Outcome-focused : Goals are usually centered around the end…
