A brief review of talking points against electric cars

I predict that nearly all cars sold in 50 years are going to be electric.

Just like some people still drive a horse and buggy, there will be people who still drive gas cars. But electric cars are the future.

However, many people don’t like electric cars currently. They usually have the same talking points.

Talking points against electric cars include:

  • Electric car batteries need rare metals.
  • Making electric cars creates more emissions.
  • They are only as green as their power sources.
  • Electric cars can be expensive to buy.
  • You can’t drive as far in an electric car.
  • There aren’t enough charging points.

Let’s deal with each one.

Rare metals — Once mined they can be recycled. So mine once use a lot of times. Or like fossil fuels, mine once and burn away never to be used again.

Making electric cars creates more emissions — more than what? The majority of a gas cars emissions occurs during the driving, so even if there are more emissions creating an electric car, over the life time the electric car emits fewer.

They are only as green as their power sources. — Gas cars can’t get more efficient. The lose a huge amount of energy to heat. Electric cars get more efficient as their power sources gets more efficient, which is happening all the time. So electric cars get greener, gas cars never do.

Electric cars can be expensive to buy. — All cars are expensive to buy. But prices are coming down and will continue to drop.

You can’t drive as far in an electric car. — 95% of all driving happens within a 100 mile radius of your house. You don’t need to drive across the country every day. Range will increase.

There aren’t enough charging points. — There are ‘enough’ gas stations because we built them. There will be enough charging points. And the majority of all charging happens at your house or work. It is like a magical goblin takes your car to the gas station and fills it up for pennies each night as you sleep.

I didn’t include the sources for each of the arguments above because I wanted to publish the draft fast, but I will be including the sources shortly.
